So my kids have been climbing out of their cribs for months now, but I am finally accepting the reality that it may be time for twin beds.
First, we broke the base of their cribs and put their mattresses on the floor. That kept them caged in for only a few weeks before they developed enough core and upper body strength to pull themselves out. Just last week, Brody climbed out of his crib, onto the changing table, across and into Bryce’s crib. Then, he hoisted her out onto the window sill, climbed out himself and, to my horror, they both stood on the window and pulled the curtains, laughing.
On Friday, both children climbed out of their cribs at my in-law’s house, still in their sleep sacs, left their nursery, walked down the hall and down the stairs, only to arrive in the living room minutes later. I was both shocked and petrified by their maniacal monkey abilities. And while I am not so sure if we are all ready for beds, and the thought of midnight visits terrifies me almost as much as their crib acrobatics, I think, for safety reasons at the very least, it is time.
After settling on a simple white metal bed frame, I began my quest for gender neutral sheet sets that were sophisticated enough for them to grow with, yet sweet and soft enough to envelope their two-year-old bodies. While Brody is a car and truck addict, and Bryce prefers ballerinas and fairy princesses, I decided I would accessorize their personality traits in pillows, and keep the bedding neutral, given that they are still sharing a room.
I stumbled across Little Auggie at ABC Carpet and Home yesterday and I loved their interchangeable patterns. I settled on this gray theme to compliment their room. The fabric is soft enough for their tender skin, yet firm enough to hold a good press – because there is nothing like a set of crisp, ironed sheets at the end of a long day.
I cannot wait to see how their nursery develops into a more mature toddler room – I can wait, however, for them to stop napping altogether.
