Earlier this year, we had quite an incident with a bottle of pink nail polish. While Bryce was choosing her color for our weekly manicure date – totally normal for a two-year-old don’t you think? – Brody got a hold of the bottle, broke off the plastic top and proceeded to pour out the contents of the bottle all over our light linen couch. Hot pink liquid seeped into the pillows and covered his hands. This all happened when I turned my head for less than two minutes to say goodbye to a visitor. Indeed, my kids act quickly and their damage can be severe.
Bryce was horrified that her favorite color was dripping from our sofa, Brody was shocked by the impact of his decision and his newly pink skin, and I just cried heavy tears for our streaked living room furniture. New note to self – do not own anything nice when you are raising two toddlers.
Luckily, it was all rectifiable. I was able to wipe Brody’s hands clean with just water, Bryce settled on the purple polish to paint her nails, and after a lot of back and forth with an upholsterer, I was able to replace the damaged pillows.
During all this drama, I never worried about the kids’ safety amidst all that soaking polish My children still have the tendency to put objects in their mouth, even at two-and-a-half, and especially their dirty hands. But, I am a loyal fan of Piggy Paint, a non-toxic water-based nail polish made of natural ingredients (read- safe for kids). Whether or not their curiosity was enticed by the candy colored polish, their little bodies were safe from ingesting any harmful chemicals like formaldehyde, toluene, and phthalates, among others that are found in many popular and widely used polish brands.
I also love the selection of colors, which are bright and vibrant enough for Bryce’s taste, and also include a wide range of pink shades, which we both appreciate. The polish dries quickly, which is important for her busy little hands. And, although it wipes from her nails rather easily, I prefer that to soaking her little fingers in acetone-based remover.
We do our manicures outside the home now, and I feel good knowing that I am keeping her little hands safe as well as my home.
