Mondays are always an organizational day for me. We typically come back into the city from the weekend early in the morning. This is to avoid the beach traffic rush on Sunday nights. That means, much of the day is spent unpacking, doing endless loads of laundry, and herding my kids out of my room so that I can actually fold a shirt properly without them ripping the clothing from my hands.
It is also a time where I check the stack of mail that has piled up on my desk all week, remind myself of my never-ending child-focused to-do list, and sigh in exhaustion and anticipation of the next days ahead.
However, it is also a time where I get to refocus a little, whether it is cleaning out my closet in an effort to sneak in some extra summer purchases, or changing the artwork on our playroom wall. Most recently, it has been preparing family memory books for my kids to bring to their first day of preschool in September. I have been eagerly gluing on photos and mementos of their family members, friends and beloved objects around the apartment. I have also been making a calendar of school activities and important dates occurring in the Fall. Maybe I am being a bit overzealous since it is only July, but I am just as anxious as them about starting school, and I like to appear as though I have it together, even though I will likely be a forgetful, emotional mess.
I decided my office needed a revamp to make the small space a little more user-friendly. That included finding a place for the endless array of papers that keep filling our mailbox. An avid ETSY fan, I found this magnetic board that was both functional and stylish for the neutral color scheme of the space. The frame is painted white wood and sitting atop the board is a silver and gold glossy coated “wood-print” magnetic board. It is incredibly sturdy, and it rests like a true piece of art atop my grandmother’s old chest from Spain. I am so pleased with the quality and functionality of the board, I am debating having another one made on a grander scale for our kitchen.
I am going to use it to help keep track of school events and also social invitations. While my husband and I do share a Google calendar to keep track of day-to-day events, I like to have tangible notices and showcase attractive invitations, as a way to support the purpose of this work space.
