I had a post lined up for today about my favorite pair of sunglasses. In light of the mass shooting in Orlando yesterday, which sadly, also occurred on my birthday, I think it is important to stop and reflect on something much greater.
As a human, I recognize that I/we all live in a very big world with so many different people of all ages, races, genders, sexual orientations and religions. Earth would be a very boring place without such diversity.
As a teacher, who taught world religion as part of my fourth grade curriculum, I recognize the astonishing similarities in many belief systems. Despite being constantly misunderstood and overshadowed by a cloud of extremist hate and anger, I have watched children uncover the universal messages of acceptance and generosity that underscore many of these religious ideals. I have smiled as they marvel at how alike we all really are, no matter what we choose to believe, or even if we choose not to believe in a greater force at all.
As a mother of two children born from unconventional reproductive methods, into a family of mixed religions and cultures, I feel blessed that they have known that love is a deep emotional bond that far exceeds how we got here, what we look like, or what higher power we choose to celebrate.
I wish for my children a life that is beautiful and unique and filled with people that love them, accept them, and celebrate who they innately are or choose to be.
We are all global citizens of this planet, why can’t we appreciate the beauty in that?
